ASEAN MPS URGE: BAR MYANMAR FROM CHAIRING ASEAN, REVIEW MEMBERSHIP

For immediate release: November 28, 2004

Kuala Lumpur, Sunday: ASEAN parliamentarians today urged that ASEAN bar Myanmar from being awarded the chairmanship and immediately review Myanmar's membership with a view to suspending it.

Citing "absence of substantial and meaningful democratic and constitutional reforms", a statement issued by a workshop of ASEAN Parliamentarians on Myanmar called for a range of democratic reforms including the immediate release of pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, elected MPs and other political prisoners.

The ASEAN parliamentarians, at the conclusion of the 2-day meeting, also formed an Asean Inter-Parliamentary Caucus on Myanmar.
