Members of the Philippine Senate have urged President Gloria
March 2 (Kyodo) - Members of the Philippine Senate have urged President Gloria Arroyo to pressure Burma's military government to free pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
All 23 members of the Senate signed a resolution urging the action Wednesday. It is nonbinding, meaning it only serves to express the lawmakers' opinions. The resolution also opposes Burma's takeover of the chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations next year as scheduled.
It says Burma's human rights record makes it unfit to head the organization. President Arroyo met last month with Burma's leader, Lieutenant-General Soe Win, and expressed fear for Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been under house arrest since May, 2003.
