Dear
U Aung Shwe,
I write expressing my continued support of your struggle for the recognition
of the democratic will of the Burmese people. The Australian Greens fully
support the rights of the Burmese people to be represented by their democratically
elected leaders and recognise the legitimacy of the CRPP as an appropriate
body to convene a democratic parliament reflecting the 1990 election result.
Greens MPs are proud founding members of the newly formed Australian Coalition for Democracy in Burma which we hope will have a significant impact in broadening public interest in Burma, its culture and the repression of the people and in particular ethnic minorities and the National League for Democracy. Greens MPs at state and federal level continue to work to promote democratic reform in Burma as do our colleagues in Green parties around the world.
The Australian Greens welcome calls for reconciliation as part of genuine democratic reform, and are particularly pleased to see the release of student leader Min ko Naing who continues to show inspirational leadership on these issues.
However, I note with concern recent developments in Burma which indicate a strengthening of the hardline control of the military regime including the military offensive waged against ethnic armed groups.
I have successfully moved a motion in Federal parliament in support of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and called for her immediate unconditional release along with all other political prisoners. I will be moving another motion in the coming sitting of parliament and hope to once again win the support of the Senate for our call for democratic reform and reconciliation in Burma.
I hope one day to be able to visit you as a parliamentarian visiting fellow parliamentarians in a free Burmese democracy.
Yours sincerely,
Senator Kerry Nettle
