UN and EU Representatives Meet on Burma

4 March 2005 (AP) - European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana has met in Brussels with the UN special envoy to Burma Razali Ismail to discuss the situation in the military-ruled Asian country.

Their talks on Thursday covered the likely outcome of the Burma's constitutional convention, the prospects for the release of democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi and the human rights situation in the country.

Mr. Solana's spokeswoman said he underscored the EU's commitment to the reduction of poverty and the promotion of democracy in Burma.

Mr. Razali said last month that Burma has not fully kept its pledge to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations to move toward democracy. He added that he was saddened the junta has not allowed him to return to the country.
