Members of Parliament Union
Established on 4 October 2000 Dublin, Ireland
The Members of Parliament Union - Burma (MPU) was formed on 15 June 1996 with representatives elected in the 27 May 1990 elections. The parliamentary representatives had come out of Burma with a mandate to form a provisional government in exile and to continue the struggle for the restoration of democracy and human rights in Burma.
The establishment of the MPU was formalized at a meeting held in Dublin, Ireland, on 4 October 2000. It is responsible for electing the prime minister of the National Coalition Government of the Union of Burma, and as an institution, its main focus is to raise international awareness on Burma and to garner the support of parliaments, parliamentary institutions, political parties and political institutions for the Committee Representing People's Parliament (CRPP*) and the democracy movement of Burma in general.
* The Committee Representing People's Parliament (CRPP) was formed by the National League for Democracy and political parties of non-Burman ethnic nationalities to perform the duties of a parliament. A large majority of elected representatives have given their mandate to the CRPP to act on their behalf before the Parliament can convene.
