NCGUB Welcomes Renewal of Import Restrictions on Junta

Press Release June 25, 2004

The National Coalition Government of the Union of Burma warmly welcomes the United States Senate and the US House of Representatives for overwhelmingly approving the renewal of import restrictions stipulated in the Burmese Freedom and Democracy Act of 2003 and acknowledges with much appreciation the strong role that the people of the United States have played in supporting the movement for democracy in Burma.

The NCGUB believes that the US Congressional action will further strengthen the undaunting spirit of the democracy activists and leaders in and outside Burma who are continuing their struggle for democracy. It also affirms that the international community is not accepting the situation in Burma where U Tin Oo, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, and other democracy leaders are being detained and deprived of their right to participate in the talks for the future of the country.

Prime Minister Dr Sein Win said, "What is important about the US Congressional action is that it emphasizes the fact that the Burmese generals cannot mislead the international community with their so-called National Convention even though they are hoping to gain international acceptance through it."

The NCGUB calls on democratic nations and neighboring countries to reject the outcome of the military's so-called "National Convention" and to take stronger multilateral action, including raising the Burma issue at the United Nations Security Council to bring about democratic changes in the country.
