Statement No. 2 (8/01)

Restrictions placed on Chairman U Aung Shwe and Vice Chairman U Tin Oo of the National League for Democracy (NLD) were lifted on the afternoon of 26 August 2001. At 4:00 pm on the same day, the chairman and the vice chairman met with Secretary U Lwin and General Secretary Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

Chairman U Aung Shwe and Vice Chairman U Tin Oo have complete confidence in Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and expressed their full agreement with and support for the efforts of the general secretary. In accordance with the mandate given by the elected NLD representatives and the NLD organizing committees at township, state, and divisional levels, Chairman U Aung Shwe and General Secretary Daw Aung San Suu Kyi will continue to work in strong unity for the emergence of democracy.

General Secretary Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is most delighted that she can once again work together with Chairman U Aung Shwe, Vice Chairman U Tin Oo, Secretary U Lwin, and other Central Executive Committee members in performing the tasks of the NLD. This statement is made with a firm belief that all NLD members will further consolidate their unity with Chairman U Aung Shwe and the Central Executive Committee members and continue to work hand in hand with the interests of the people in mind.
