NLD Statement on SPDC's Restrictions against Daw Aung San Suu Kyi:

National League for Democracy
No: (97/B), West Shwegonedine Road
Bahan Township, Rangoon

STATEMENT REGARDING THE ATTITUDE OF THE MEMBERS OF THE NATIONAL LEAGUE FOR DEMOCRACY.

1. The National League for Democracy exists as a legally constituted political party. It therefore has the legal right to hold and organize political meetings. In all the organizational activities of the General Secretary, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi there has never been an occasion where the peace and tranquility of the region has been disturbed nor has there been any violation of the rule of law. This is a well-known fact and no one can assert otherwise.

2. The State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) has full knowledge of this fact. Despite this, making false excuses, the SPDC illegally blockaded and prevented her from travelling to Kungyankon and Kawhmu towns (Rangoon Division) to perform legitimate organizational duties. Not just that, they resorted to physical force and took her back to her residence and locked her up and all the Central Executive Committee members including the President in their houses. They illegally invaded the NLD head office at night stealing property and documents in violation of the law.

Members of the NLD vehemently condemn these illegal actions and announce that such illegal actions will not reduce or weaken the membership, its unity or the support of the masses.

3. No one will deny that the SPDC itself has by these actions extinguished the "rule of law".

The country's present difficulties will not be solved by SPDC resorting to illegal activities. The situation is bound to get worse until a climax is reached where everything will be completely out of control and anarchy will reign. SPDC's constantly proclaimed "modern developed democratic country" can in no way come into existence.

Also, peaceful transition to a political system that exists in civilized and moral countries of today cannot be made.

4. Because of the National League for Democracy and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's efforts armed conflict has been reduced. In addition to the possibility of bringing about unity among the different ethnic groups, the farmers, the workers and the youth of the country have gained strength and have cause to hope.

We vigorously demand the immediate withdrawal of restrictions placed on the movements of our leaders, the NLD head Office be reopened and all the rights of a legally constituted political party be fully restored.

NLD members.
