Statement 61/2000: Statement
61 (4/00) (translation) 2. The military that possess power return some of those held in illegal custody to their homes for one or two days fortnightly and on important days according to the Buddhist beliefs e.g. New Years day and during the Thingyan festival days. This is the practice of the military anashins (dictators) who are illegally holding the parliamentarians at their bases situated in the Rangoon Division, Hlegu and Thanlyin townships. In the other districts the military anashins do just as they like. 3. This fortnightly reunion with families has been stopped since the 31st March 2000, by the anashins of the Ye-mun military base and no reason has been given. 4. These elected representatives of the people have committed no offence whatsoever and holding them in custody thus, granting them family reunions for short periods periodically is meaningless and is without any legal authority. We ardently ask that they be immediately released from the military bases where they are being held. Central
