NLD Statement 70/2000:

Statement 70 (5/00) (translation)

1. The Military Intelligence personnel have resumed arresting and imprisoning NLD parliamentarians and Organising committee members since 12 May 2000.

2. The list so arrested as of this day (15 May 2000) is as follows:-
a) Members elected to parliament 12
b) Organising committee members Rangoon Division, Dagon Myothit towwnship Kyemyindine township,Mingaladon township,South Okalapa township 11 (already published)
c) Organising committee members ,Rangoon Division (Sanchaung township) ,Mandalay Division (Madaya township) 4
d) Youth Wing members (Rangoon Division) 29 (already published)
e) Organising committee members, Youth Wing members and other NLD members Magwe Division, (Taungdwingyi township) 39

3. It has been reported to us that of the 12 parliamentarians, U Than Lwyn, member for Madaya township (Mandalay Division) was sentenced to suffer 9 years imprisonment. Of the 38 arrested and taken into custody in Taungdwingyi township, 8 have been sentenced to suffer 7 years imprisonment each. The rest are still in custody.

4. We harshly condemn the Military Intelligence Services for the abovementioned illegal arrests and imprisonment.
