Burmese army officers depart for Russia

14 September 2004 (DVB) - At least 186 young military officers of Burma’s military junta, State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) left for Moscow in Russia from Mandalay International Airport in central Burma on 14 September for military and technology trainings, according to an official of the airport.

Two Boeing 767 planes owned by the Russian Airline carrying army officers left Mandalay International Airport.

According to U Htay Aung, an exiled expert on Burma Army, the junta has been sending schools of army officers to Israel, China, Pakistan and India to study military and nuclear technologies.

The junta would also send its officers to western nations had it not been barred from going to the West by the embargos, he added.

The junta and Russian government are said to be cooperating closely and it is rumoured that the junta is planning to buy a 10 mega watt nuclear plant from Russia.

The officers are expected to study nuclear energy technology, as well as the Russian military strategies. [Source]
