Unofficial translation of the letter from the Political Veterans to the NLD mentioning their support to the signature
campaign of the NLD requesting the release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and the political prisoners and the reopening of all NLD offices.

To

The President,

Central Executive Committee

National League for Democracy

8 August 2004

Subject …………. In the matter of signing petitions of support.

1. We have heard from foreign correspondents and foreign radio broadcasts that since the 19th July 2004 (martyrs day), the National League for Democracy has initiated petitions which have been endorsed by a multitude of supporters including members of other political parties requesting the authorities to :-

(1) Release Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and U Tin U;

(2) Permit all its branches at every level to freely participate in legal political activities and

(3) To release of all political prisoners.

2. Since the Depaiyin episode of the 30th May 2003 which was a monstrous violation of democratic principles, we political veterans have repeatedly written to the State Peace and Development Council urging them to do just what has been stated above. We honestly believe that the one and only method for the establishment of a peaceful and prosperous nation and for national reconciliation is through freedom and dialogue.

3. We the undersigned political veterans are convinced that the petition and three requests initiated by the National League for Democracy is right and just and we endorse and give our support to them.

4. We believe that the entire country will sign and sponsor the petition if they are assured that there will be no unjust retaliation or persecution.
