RSF: Burma Shuts Down Magazine, Threatens Another, Harasses Writers

15 Sep 2004 (VOA) - An international media rights group has called on Burma to allow a news magazine to resume publishing in the country.

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) says Burma's censorship bureau shut down the privately-owned Khit-Sann earlier this month for being, in its words, too pro-American.

The group says Khit-Sann had been published since August 2003, and was popular with young people and intellectuals in Burma.

Reporters Without Borders says another privately-owned publication, Khit-Thit, was issued warnings by Burma's censorship bureau for publishing a cover photo it deemed too aggressive.

The group also accused Burma's military government of harassing two pro-democracy writers after they gave interviews to Voice of America and Radio Free Asia.

Burma has not commented on the reports. [See RSF Press Release]
