China's Army Chief Meets Burmese Leaders

23 October 2006 (VOA) - Burmese state media say China's army chief, General Liang Guanglie, has met with Burmese leaders in the country's new administrative capital, Naypyidaw.

The official New Light of Myanmar newspaper says General Liang led a Chinese delegation on a goodwill visit to the central Burmese town Sunday. The paper says Liang met with Burma's leader, General Than Shwe, and other officials.

No details of the talks were released.

China is Burma's strongest ally, providing the country with economic and military assistance. Burma's military leadership has been largely isolated by the West because of its poor human rights record and failure to restore democracy.
