Burma Junta tightening control on convention delegates

21 June 2004 (DVB) - The Burmese authorities are tightening control on delegates attending the constitution-drafting ‘National convention’ at Nyaung-Hnapin-Kwin near Rangoon causing complaints among the delegates.

During last weekend, although delegates were given weekend pass, only ten important delegates were allowed to leave and the remaining delegates were forced to visit pagodas on a pilgrimage, according a ceasefire delegate who doesn’t want to be named.

The ten important delegates had to sign the agreement that they would not talk to the outside media before they were given the pass for the weekend.

According to the delegate, the junta is mainly concerned over the matter of power division between the mainland and the states proposed by the ceasefire groups.
