Burma's top Army official's secretary assassinated

Jan 23, 2005 (DVB) - Personal secretary of General Maung Aye, vice chairman of the SPDC was assassinated in his office at the Rangoon's military headquarters on Firday evening, Jan 21, according several sources. The news shocked the top military circle, the source said.

Lt-Col Bo Win Tun, 42, personal secretary of Gen Maung Aye was taking his night duty when he was killed. It was not clear how he was killed but one source said he was slain by another military officier closed to former military intelligent chief Gen Khin Nyunt with a knife. Another source said it was an assassination attempt at Gen Maung Aye and Lt-Col Bo Win tun was trying to protect Maung Aye during the shoot out.

DVB cannot independently varify the news and it was not clear who the assassinator is and what happened to him.

The government said nothing about the assassination of Lt-Col Bo Win Tun. But in the today state-owned newspaper (Jan 23), New Light of Myanmar, the family members of the Lt-Col Bo Win Tun made the funeral annocement that the military official funeral for Lt-Col Bo Win Tun will be held this afternoon at army cemetery in Mingaladon. They said: "he died while serving active duty for the army."
