Burmese Student Leader Needs Time to Adapt to Freedom

20 Nov 2004 (VOA) - Min Ko Naing, the Burmese student leader who was released after nearly 16 years of imprisonment, says he has a lot of catching up to do.

Now 42 years old, the former activist spent most of his time in prison in total solitary confinement, unable even to talk to other prisoners, and he says he does not know "what has been happening on the outside."

Min Ko Naing told reporters Saturday he needs to learn again how to communicate with people.

He told VOA he will wait to learn more about the current situation in Burma before making any political comments. (Information for this story is provided by AFP and Reuters.)
