More restrictions on Daw Aung San Suu Kyi

Jan 22, 2005 (DVB) - Burma’s military junta, State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) is imposing more restrictions on the Nobel laureate Daw Aung San Suu Kyi who has been under house arrest at her lakeside home in Rangoon.

The junta promised that her family doctor Dr. Tin Myo Win would be allowed to see her once a week for medical check-ups. Originally she was allowed to see him three times a week and now her doctor is not even allowed to see her even once a week, according to her party National League for Democracy (NLD) spokesman U Lwin.

“We haven’t heard anything from her except that she is well,” U Lwin told DVB. He added that the doctor has not been able to visit her whenever he deems it necessary to do so.

When asked about the security arrangements for Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, U Lwin said that the junta security personnel are guarding the outer part of her compound and two women have been kept with her all the time inside the compound.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and her deputy U Tin Oo have been under house arrest since they were attacked by the junta-sponsored thugs at Dipeyin in Upper Burma on 30 May 2003.

Political observers in Rangoon said that they are not likely to be released soon but they could be allowed to meet with NLD central executive committee members for discussions in time for the junta-sponsored National Convention.

U Lwin refused to comment on their speculations and urged all concerned to work hard on the national reconciliation starting with “deleting the past deeds” without bearing grudges, as suggested by the NLD.
