Burma's Opposition Party Challenges Suu Kyi Detention

22 Dec (VOA) - Burma's opposition party, led by detained pro-democracy activist Aung San Suu Kyi, has submitted an appeal to the military government challenging her house arrest.

A party statement Thursday called Aung San Suu Kyi's house arrest, which was extended by six months in November, legally flawed.

The head of the National League for Democracy has spent 10 of the last 16 years in detention, mostly under house arrest.

Aung San Suu Kyi was last taken into custody on May 30th of 2003, after her motorcade was attacked by a pro-military crowd as she made a political tour of northern Burma.

Both the United States and the European Union have imposed sanctions on Burma for its suppression of the pro-democracy movement.
