NLD considers helping junta draft constitution
Jan

- Myanmar's main opposition party headed by Aung San Suu Kyi said Thursday
it wants to "start from a clean slate" with the country's military
junta and enter talks which could see it help draft a constitution.
"We want to meet and discuss with the authorities, as we have said
earlier, and we are also interested in drafting the constitution,"
NLD spokesman U Lwin told AFP.
"Why don't we start from a clean slate? We always hoped to draft the
constitution," U Lwin said.
The junta announced Wednesday that a national convention aimed at drafting
a new constitution would resume on February 17. It describes the convention
as the first of seven steps on its "road map" to democracy.
U Lwin insisted the NLD had not changed its stance regarding the national
convention.
The party insists that it will join the proceedings only if Aung San Suu
Kyi and her number two Tin Oo are released from house arrest and if NLD
offices around the country are allowed to reopen following a crackdown in
2003.
"Our position remains the same," he said.
