NLD members systematically persecuted by Burma junta
11 August 2004 (DVB) - The military junta of Burma, State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) is systematically persecuting members of National League for Democracy (NLD) by deliberately ruining their legal businesses with restrictions and bans.
‘Modern’ teashop owned by U Ko Gyi, an organising member and treasurer of Mandalay Division NLD was forced to close down at the end of July by the local authorities without citing any valid excuse.
The teashop was opened in June with proper license at Yadanabon University Avenue in Pyigyitagun Township but it was accused of invading public space with flower pots and it was forced to close down by Major Aung Soe on 31 July.
U Ko Gyi’s son was detained at Khamti Prison in northern Burma for driving the car of democracy leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi when she and her supporters were attacked in an ambush by thugs hired by the junta at Dipeyin in upper Burma on 30 May 2003.
Daw Nan Khin Htway Myint, the elected representative of Pa-an Township, Karen State and U Than Htay, the elected representative of Lashio Township in northeast Burma told DVB that they are also the victims of the junta’s systematic persecutions on the NLD.
