NLD petition campaign latest

9 August 2004 (DVB) - Despite warnings and harassments from the local military authorities, members of National League for Democracy (NLD) are intensifying the signature signing campaign calling for the release of all political prisoners including democracy leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and the reopening of NLD offices throughout Burma.

The NLD elected representative of Pa-an Township in Karen State Daw Nant Khin Htway Myint told DVB that she was summoned by the local election holding commission and told not to stop the campaign.

She was also pressured to sign a document which says that she is aware that she was warned, but she refused to do so.

She told the authorities that she would not stop people from putting their signatures for the NLD out of their own free will.

The NLD elected representative of Kale Township in northwest Burma Dr Thein Win was also summoned by the local authorities but only told to carry out the campaign ‘quietly’.

Both representatives vow to continue with their activities until told by their leaders to do otherwise. [Source]
