Rome calls for immediate release of Aung San Suu Kyi

Dec 2 (AFP) - Italy on Thursday called for the "immediate release" of Myanmar's opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, whose already lengthy house arrest has been extended by the military authorities in Yangon.

"If confirmed, the decision by the Myanmar junta to extend for another year the detention of the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize laureate and democratic opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi gives rise to very great concern," deputy foreign minister Margherita Boniver said in a statement.
