Sagaing Division NLD chairman U Kyaw San detained
Mar 17 2005 (DVB) - The chairman of Sagaing Division National League for Democracy (NLD) U Kyaw San has been summoned and detained by the local authority in Rangoon, at around 11am local time on 17 March.
“We were visiting upper Burma to see his sister who was having operations on her eyes. It happened the next day after our return to Rangoon,” said Kyaw San’s wife Daw May Nwet. “Some of our son’s Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA) friends came to drop some goods at our home. We knew nothing about it. Only in the next morning, did we know that they were DKBA’s possessions”.
She added the authorities came to confiscate these items, and took U Kyaw San away for keeping “illegal” goods at his home, as the head of a family. He is currently detained at Insein police station for some “questioning”. “I don’t know if he is going to be released or not,” said May Nwet.
U Kyaw San was sent to prison for nearly 10 years for welcoming the Nobel Peace Prize for Burma’s democracy leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, and he was released only last November.
