Thailand, Burma talks planned for next week

6 August (ABC) - Thailand's Foreign Minister, Surakiart Sathirathai, will meet United Nations special envoy to Burma, Razali Ismail, next week to discuss Thailand's proposed "roadmap" for democracy in the military-rule nation.

Mr Surakiart held talks with his Burma counterpart, Win Aung, last Friday over the roadmap, which includes the release of opposition pro-democracy leader, Aung San Suu Kyi.

Win Aung pledged after the meeting to present the plan to the country's ruling generals, while Mr Surakiart said he wanted to discuss it with Mr Razali, as well as Singapore's leaders.

Thailand has proposed the roadmap as a way of easing international pressure on its neighbour to free Aung San Suu Kyi, who was detained after May 30 clashes between a junta-backed mob and her supporters.

Thailand's Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra says Mr Razali supported the plan after the two met last month in Malaysia.

Burma's detention of Suu Kyi has outraged the international community but the ruling generals have refused to give any timeframe for her release.
