Time to get tough with Myanmar

October 6 (Malay Mail) - The DAP wants Malaysia to get tough with Myanmar's military government.

Seputeh MP Teresa Kok said in two years, Myanmar will play host to an Asean international conference and this would be a disgrace to the 10- member grouping.

"The Yangon military government has consistently ignored the appeals of the international community and Asean to release political prisoners, including Aung San Suu Kyi, and stop human rights abuses," she said.

"Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad last year called on
Asean to expel Myanmar for its human rights abuses. I hope Malaysia will uphold his firm stand in the event of Myanmar's leaders making no effort to improve human rights," she said.
