International Trade Unions Urge Stronger EU Measures Against Burma

21 Apr (VOA) - Two international trade federations have urged the European Union to take stronger measures against Burma's military government when it reviews its so-called "Common Position" on that Southeast Asian country.

In a letter to the EU's External Relations commissioner Benita Ferrero -Waldner the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions and the European Trade Union Confederation cited the continued use of forced labor and a range of human rights abuses by the Burmese military.

Both federations called on the European Union to order an end to investment and other business involvement in Burma by EU registered companies. The appeals comes a week after criticism of Burma's military government by the UN Commission on Human Rights. [Source]
