Tsunami Kills 10 in central Burma
Dec
26 (Reuters) - The tsunami which drove through the Andaman Sea on
Sun day destroyed a bridge in southeast Myanmar and killed 10 people and
a number of fishing trawlers were missing at sea, a fishing operator said.
The six men and four women were killed in the coastal town of Kawthaung
when the huge wave caused by an earthquake off the Indonesian island of
Sumatra struck.
''They were killed when a bridge collapsed,'' said the operator of a fishing
company in the town.
Officials were not reachable in Kawthaung, which lies close to the border
with Thailand where at least 223 people were killed by the monster wave.
The fishing operator said a number of trawlers had been at sea when the
waves struck and their fate was not known.
State television in the secretive, military-ruled country confirmed that
the undersea quake and several aftershocks had been felt in Myanmar. But
it gave no details of damage or injuries.
In Bangkok, scientists said they had detected a 6.4 magnitude earthquake
centered in Myanmar on Sunday at around 8 a.m. (0100 GMT).
The aftershocks from the quake continued until about 1 p.m.(0600) and were
felt across northern Thailand.
The former Burma is no stranger to quakes. Tremors measuring 6.7 on the
Richter scale damaged three ancient pagodas in central Myanmar in September
last year.
