UN Agency Distributes Food To Burmese AIDS Sufferers
19 Mar 2004 (VOA) - The World Food Program has started distributing food aid to families in Burma affected by AIDS and HIV. The U.N. agency says about 400 families will be given a monthly ration of 65 kilograms of rice. All of the aid recipients live in central Burma, which the WFP says has been hit hard by AIDS.
The United Nations estimates that up to 500,000 people in Burma have HIV, and that more than two percent of pregnant women are infected. (Information for this report is provided by AP, AFP and Reuters.)
