UN envoy’s representative meets UNA in Rangoon

August 20 (DVB) - Mr. Leon de Ridematten, Rangoon representative of UN special envoy to Burma Mr. Razali Ismail met and held talks with representatives of United Nationalities Alliance (UNA) in Rangoon on 20 August.

According to the UNA spokesman and chairman of Zomi National Congress U Pu Cin Siang Thang, de Riedmatten wanted to know about the prevailing political situation and the views and attitudes of ethnic national so that he could report them on to Mr. Razli when he meets him soon in Kuala Lumpur.

They explained to him that the position of UNA which is formed with 9 election winning ethnic political parties hasn’t changed since its refusal to attend the constitution ‘National Convention’ organised by Burma’s military junta, State Peace and Development Council (SPDC).

‘We did not attend the National Convention in the first place because we did not believe in it. The cease-fire groups that attended the National Convention said they were not satisfied. The 13 cease-fire groups that attended the National Convention presented a collective report and it was not given proper consideration’, he said.

Those attended the meeting included Naing Tun Thein the chairman and Naing Ngwe Thein the vice chairman of Mon National Democratic Front (MNDF), U Khun Tun Oo and Sai Nyunt Lwin of Shan Nationalities League for Democracy (SNLD) and U Thar Ban of Arakan League for Democracy (ALD).

The National League for Democracy (NLD) and other ethnic national political parties including UNA boycotted the constitution drafting convention because the junta refused to release political prisoners including NLD leaders Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and U Tin Oo and lack of transparency and fairness.
