UNLD fully supports NLD petition campaign

23 August 2004 (DVB) - United Nationalities League for Democracy (UNLD) which is made up of 21 ethnic national political parties in Burma expressed its full support for the signature collecting campaign of the National League for Democracy (NLD) calling for the release of all political prisoners including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and her deputy U Tin Oo.

The letter was delivered by hand to the NLD HQs in Rangoon by U Htaung Co Thang of UNLD and he was warmly welcomed by the NLD leaders.

The letter says that the UNLD support the efforts of the NLD without reservation, for the sacrifices it made for the emergence of democracy in Burma.

The letter also urges the people of Burma to show their support by signing the petition themselves.

He added that ethnic national groups from Nagaland, Kachin, Kayah and Arakan States also expressed their support for the NLD.

The UNLD also welcomed the UN General Secretary Kofi Annan’s call for the release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and the resumption of talks among the military junta, State Peace and Development Council (SPDC), the NLD and ethnic national groups before the so-called National Convention is resumed.

Meanwhile, the local military authorities throughout Burma are still trying to stop the people from signing the petition with threats and intimidations. [Source]
