The NCGUB today welcomed the action of the Quebec National Assembly supporting Burma's democratically elected leaders and urging Canada's national government to recognize the Committee Representing the People's Parliament(CRPP) as "the legitimate representative of the Burmese people." Dr. Sein Win, speaking from Quebec City, said "we welcome Quebec's action and note that it is a particularly appropriate way to honor International Human Rights Day." Officials of the NCGUB, including the Prime Minister Dr. Sein Win, are in Quebec where they have been supporting an effort by Canadian activists to push for the resolution. The CRPP was formed in September 1998 with the mandate of 251 of the surviving members of Burma's parliament elected in 1990. The parliamentarians have given the Committee the mandate to convene the full parliament as soon as possible and to act on their behalf in the meantime. The Committee includes Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, General Secretary of the National League for Democracy and 1991 Nobel Peace laureate. Quebec joins British Columbia as the second Canadian province to take the step of supporting the CRPP. The parliaments of Norway, Denmark and Belgium, as well as the Inter-Parliamentary Union, Christian Democrat International and the Socialist International have also taken positions supporting the CRPP. |
