Appeal by Burmese Members of Parliament to Indian Members of Parliament
21-12-04
Objective:
Democracy and national reconciliation in Burma
Task:
To seek contribution of democratically elected people’s representatives
for the cause of Burmese people.
Because:
• The free and fairly held election of 1990 has not been honored till
today
• The National Convention to draft a new constitution is held by the
authorities without NLD and ethnic political parties
• The election winner, (NLD) headed by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has been
under constant pressure by the military regime of Burma
•
Duly elected MPs are forced
to resign
•
Over 200 MPs were detained for trying to convene the parliament,
•
Those MPs who tried to form a parallel government are sentenced to 25 years,
•
Till today there are 13 MPs remain in prison,
•
Only one NLD party office is allowed to function,
•
Daw Aung San Suu Kyi (General Secretary) and U Tin Oo (Vice chairman) are
still under house arrest,
•
All Central Executive Committee members are not allowed to meet the detained
party leaders, etc.
Role of
MPs around the world
So far only the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) has been passing resolution
to push for democracy in Burma.
What we
want:
Contribution of fellow parliamentarians around the world to work for democracy
in Burma hopping that is legitimate and forceful. We are appealing parliamentarians
to form “Burma Caucus” in their respected parliamentary to raise
questions on Burma and to call for legitimate rights of fellow Burmese MPs.
What we
have had so far:
Pro-democracy Burma caucus in Malaysian parliament has been formed. It includes
from both ruling and opposition MPs. It has sponsored a workshop on Burma
in Kula Lumpur in November 2004. West Australian has one. Thailand is exploring.
Our appeal:
Burmese MPs in exile appeal Indian MPs to constitute a Burma Caucus in the
Indian Parliament. Ms Nirmala Deshpandey is requested to take initiative and:
• To invite MPs from both Lok Sabah and Raja Sabah,
• To invite MPs from all major political parties,
• The interim caucus should be formed before formal creation,
• To invite Prime Minister of the government in exile to a formal meeting
of the caucus,
• To expend inviting MPs from SAARC so that SAARC Burma Caucus is constituted.
